One outlet’s claim that Australians are suddenly Googling Polari rests on vibes, not verifiable data.
Polari was never a full language. It was a patchwork of slang used by British sailors, circus folk and gay men to dodge arrest before 1967, when male homosexuality was still a crime in the UK. It survived mostly in old Round the Horne sketches and academic papers, not daily speech.
The Star Observer piece leans on the idea that Australians are ‘suddenly searching’ for it, but no search volume figures, no Trends screenshot, no date range are given. That’s the tell. A rise from near-zero interest to slightly-more-than-zero interest can look dramatic on a graph and mean almost nothing in absolute terms.
There is a real pattern here, just not the one implied. Queer history stories cycle through media on a loop, usually triggered by a TikTok clip, a museum exhibit or a Pride month news gap. Polari resurfaces every few years because it’s a good story, not because gay Australians are relearning a secret tongue.
Grade: claim unverified. The cultural interest in coded queer history is plausible and worth noting; a genuine spike in search behaviour, unproven. Until someone publishes actual numbers, treat this as nostalgia dressed as trend.
