Coyne helicopter case: light show, no green men

A 1973 near-miss over Ohio still gets billed as proof of alien intervention; the record says something duller.

Four Army Reserve crew, not National Guard as some retellings claim, reported a red light that nearly hit their helicopter near Mansfield in October 1973. They also reported an odd, brief climb in altitude. Fifty years on, that’s the whole physical record.

Skeptoid’s rundown lines up the usual suspects: a meteor fireball for the light, altimeter lag or wind shear for the climb, memory doing the rest under adrenaline. None of it is proven; none of it needs little grey men either.

Call it unresolved, not unexplained. The gap between those two words is where most UFO folklore lives.
