MKULTRA study measured psilocybin against LSD dose for dose

A declassified Addiction Research Center trial produced clean pharmacological data on two drugs the agency wanted weaponised.

Document DOC_0000151875 records work by Harris Isbell at the NIMH Addiction Research Center in Lexington, Kentucky. He compared psilocybin and LSD-25 head to head, tracking dose against effect in the same subjects under the same conditions. The numbers are specific: onset times, duration curves, subjective potency ratios. It reads like proper pharmacology, because it is.

That is the problem. Isbell’s subjects were prisoners, many held for addiction, some kept dosed for months as a condition of parole hopes. Consent was thin or absent. The science survives hostile scrutiny; the ethics do not. Both things are true at once.

We grade this diamond because the method holds. The dose-response data has been cited outside MKULTRA circles in later serotonergic drug research, and nothing here looks fabricated or padded for a funding report. It is real pharmacology, extracted through a programme with no defensible consent structure.

So the finding stands as evidence, not vindication. LSD’s civilian legend, the CIA created a monster it barely understood, needs revision. The agency understood dose-effect curves well enough to publish them. What it never worked out, or never cared to, was what a coerced dataset actually costs.
