Two surveys, no new evidence for aliens

A gap between expert caution and online enthusiasm says more about sampling methods than about extraterrestrial life.

A peer-reviewed poll of astrobiologists put belief in extraterrestrial intelligence at 58.2%; a self-selected online sample scored 95%. Numbers alone don’t decide truth. The 37-point gap looks dramatic on a bar chart, but it mostly reflects who bothered to answer.

Astrobiologists surveyed through formal channels tend toward hedged, peer-checked answers; anyone volunteering for an online preprint survey about aliens has probably already decided aliens are likely. That’s selection bias, not a shift in cosmic probability. Space Daily’s own summary admits the methods don’t allow a clean comparison, then runs the headline anyway.

No new data on alien life exists here. What exists is two different measurement instruments producing two different numbers, and a public appetite for reading ‘striking divide’ as if it were a signal from Tau Ceti. It isn’t.
