A UFO story that admits it is fiction

Choose Your Own Adventure reprints its 1982 alien-ship gamebook; nobody involved claims it happened.

Inside UFO 54-40 is back in print. Edward Packard’s 1982 branching tale sends the reader aboard a saucer in search of Ultima, a hidden utopia; there are dozens of endings, most of them bad. Bleeding Cool calls it one of the more iconic titles of the 80s run. That’s a marketing word, not a citation.

On the evidence ledger this scores zero and proudly so. No radar track, no pilot audio, no redacted memo; just a paperback with choices and page numbers. Compare that to most UAP splashes, which borrow the language of fact while offering the rigour of a choose-your-path novel. At least Packard’s book tells you upfront it’s made up.

The only real uncertainty here is which of the roughly forty endings you’ll land on. That’s the whole case file. Buy it for the nostalgia, not the disclosure.
