MKULTRA paid to screen tryptamine compounds for behavioural effects

A 1955 file describes a screening plan, not a finished experiment, and the gap between the two is the whole story.

Subproject 47 sits in the MKULTRA ledger under the name of Carl Pfeiffer, a physician working out of the New Jersey Neuropsychiatric Institute; the surviving file, DOC_0000017445, lays out a screening programme built to run systematically through tryptamine compounds and catalogue their behavioural effects. It reads like a lab protocol, not a confession.

Tryptamines cover a wide chemical family. DMT sits in it. So do several obscure cousins with no street history and no toxicology record in 1955. Pfeiffer’s proposal treats them as raw material for a screening pipeline, the sort of work that produces data tables rather than headlines.

What the document does not show is outcome. No results ledger survives in this file, no subject count, no dosage record. The word planned carries weight; MKULTRA subprojects were funded in stages, and plenty were approved on paper then quietly abandoned or folded into other work when money shifted or early results disappointed.

Call it a lead, because that is what it is. The paperwork proves intent and funding, not effect. Anyone claiming Pfeiffer’s lab produced a working behavioural agent from this material is reading further into one budget line than the record permits.
